There was an upset in Draw 9 (A side qualifier) of the Safeway men's provincial curling championship in Neepawa.

Sean Grassie of Deer Lodge defeated defending champion Rob Fowler of Brandon 8-4 in seven ends.

After giving up a single in the first end, Grassie responded with a deuce in the second. He then scored three in the fifth  and three again in the seventh for a comanding 8-3 lead. Fowler could only muster a single in the seventh, thus resulting in the two teams shaking hands.

Fowler remains alive but must win his next match (today at 4 p.m.) in order to advance.

Meanwhile, No. 1 seed Jeff Stoughton of Charleswood defeated Dave Elias of West St. Paul by a score of 9-5, while second seed Mike McEwen squeaked by Dennis Bohn of Assiniboine Memorial 6-5.

Brandon's Terry McNamee also advanced by defeating Steen Sigurdson of Fort Rouge 9-7.

Neepawa's Jerry Chudley and Kelly Robertson will both be in action in Draw 10, which begins at 12:15 p.m.
