Rivers Comets had a bit of a rough week as they suited up for three games, but couldn’t come away victorious. In their first game on July 21 Comets held a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before giving up the eventual tying runs and losing to Brandon Marlins, 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh on a walk off single. Ryan Shaw once again pitched excellently, minimizing damage and only allowing one earned run in a complete game effort. He struck out eight batters and also hit two doubles at the plate. Mike McFadden went three for four at the dish for the Comets.

Heading into the last week of regular season play, Comets had a three-game-in-three-nights schedule which saw them in tough matchups against the league’s best. Their first game of the week on July 25 saw Comets come out flat and keep a game with the Joe Beeverz Young Guns close until a five-run fifth inning sealed their fate, yielding a 9-3 loss. McFadden took the loss on the mound, hurling four-plus innings and being on the hook for six runs. Darren Whelpton had three hits and scored two runs as Comets headed into Tuesday night looking to get the wind back in their sails and turn things around.

The following night Comets matched up with Canadian Tire Cardinals in their fourth and final regular season match up. After a hard fought seven innings, the teams came away deadlocked in a 4-4 tie. Cody Nolan gave the Comets a quality start, getting the squad into the fifth inning while striking out three batters. Whelpton tripled in a run and scored himself, while Ryan Murray converted with two hits. With the tie, Comets collected six of a possible eight points against the Cardinals this season, the team that beat them in the league final a year ago.

Heading into the last game of the regular season, Comets have a record of 7-5-3 on the year, good enough for third place in the Brandon Senior AA Baseball League.
