The Manitoba Junior Hockey League held its ninth annual Showcase Weekend recently.

The event, which began on Thursday and wrapped up on Saturday in Winnipeg, is a way for the junior 'A' league to showcase its players in one location to scouts.

“Showcase has become a very popular event for both our fans and, of course, scouts who attend the event,” said MJHL commissioner Kim Davis in a release. “The feedback we receive from scouts is highly positive."

There were 11 games in total that took place at the MTS Iceplex. The Neepawa Natives played in two contests and were able to come away from the event with a 1-1 record.

Neepawa's first game of the event was against Portage on Friday afternoon and the Natives ended up falling to the Terriers by a score of 4-0.

Tyler Anton scored on a power play at the 5:35 mark of the first period to give Portage a 1-0 lead. The Terriers would increase their lead less than three minutes later on goal by Dylan Butler.

Lyndon Lipinski would score the only goal in the second period to give the Terriers a three-goal advantage.

Matt Glowa would score the fourth goal for Portage at the 15:03 mark of the third period.

Former Native Adam Iwan made 22 saves in net for Portage as he got the shutout victory.

Neepawa however was able to rebound the very next day, defeating the Winnipeg Blues 3-2.

Landon Thompson opened the scoring at the 15:33 mark of the first period to give Neepawa a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The Natives would make it 2-0 as Drake Lindsay netted a tally a little over a minute into the second period. Brock Vanderveen of the Blues would cut into the lead two minutes later to make it 2-1.

Dylan Pascoe of the Blues would then tie the score early in the third before Derrick Brooks scored midway through the period to give the Natives a lead they would not relinquish.

Corey Koop stopped 38 shots for the win in net for Neepawa.

Prior to the Showcase Weekend, the Natives hosted the Steinbach Pistons on Wednesday, Oct. 3 and were able to come away with a 2-1 win.
