Braeden Ostepchuk of the Selkirk Steelers is this year’s Manitoba Junior Hockey League selection for the CJHL player of the year award.

The 20-year-old netminder of Lethbridge, Alta., led the league with 37 wins, highlighted by six shutouts.

“Braeden is in the process of choosing a NCAA scholarship with several schools  speaking to him,” said MJHL commissioner Kim Davis in a release. “He’s an outstanding nominee. He has a tremendous SAT score of 1,920 and in high school, graduated with a 95 per cent average. Braeden is an outstanding person, student and hockey player.”

Last month, Ostepchuk was awarded the MJHL’s top goaltender award, in addition to his first team all-star selection. He was twice named the MJHL’s goaltender of the month (November and December).

Ostepchuk was selected by voting conducted by the MJHL head coaches.

Ostepchuk is now one of 10 Junior A nominees eligible for the CJHL player of the year award, which is awarded annually at the RBC Cup (May 10-18 at Vernon, BC).

Manitoba’s last national winner was Portage Terriers’ star Eric DeLong, who won the national award in 2009.
