Manitoba Winter Games recap: Team Westman finishes with 48 medals

The 2014 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games wrapped up in Winkler, Morden and the RM of Stanley over the weekend.

Team Westman finished the event in third place in the medal standings with 48 medals in total (19 gold, 14 silver and 15 bronze).

Among the bevy of medal winners was Rivers' own Amber Pomeroy, who ended up with four medals in gymnastics in the regional stream age 12 group.

After advancing to the championship finals in all four events, Pomeroy would end up taking gold in the female uneven bars, finishing with a top score of 12.60. She also won two silver medals – one of which came in the balance beam event, where she finished with a score of 12.20. She also finished in second place in the all-around event where she ended up with a score of 48.85. Pomeroy also picked up a bronze in the vault, finishing with a score of 12.10.

Pomeroy, a member of the Brandon Eagles Gymnastics Club since 2009,  has been competing on the regional team since 2011 and qualified to represent Westman at the Games in December, placing second in her category at the Westman trials in Brandon.

Cross-country skier Eveline Juce of Hamiota also came away with a medal at the Games. The 15-year-old won a bronze in the juvenile female 7.5-kilometre event, finishing with a time of 32:06. She also placed fourth in the 7.5-kilometre classic interval start competition, ending up with a time of 35:17.

Meanwhile, Ted Mullens of Oak River, who was a member of the Westman special Olympics coed curling team that won a bronze medal. Mullens' team consisted of Trent Gussie of Swan River, along with Scott Madder and Daryn Thomson of Brandon.

Other medal winners included the Westman female hockey team who won gold, defeating Team Central 1-0 in the championship final on Saturday. That team consisted of several players from Brandon, including Kristen Campbell, Jossa Danis and Jalyn Elmes.

Kate Mazur of Erickson won a bronze medal in the 2.5-kilometre classic interval start pee wee female cross country skiing event. She also placed fifth in the 2.5-kilometre pee wee female competition.

Neepawa's Jody Pottinger ended up with a bronze medal in the female gymnastics floor exercise (ages 13-21) event. She also finished in the top 10 in the all-around, vault, uneven bars and balance beam competitions as well.

The most decorative athlete for Team Westman was Brandon's Kristjan Frederickson, who took home seven medals in total -- all of which were in gymnastics.

The Winter Games began March 2 and wrapped up March 8. The event included 10 sports in total and included eight regions (two from Winnipeg).
