Fifty children enjoyed a week of fun at this year’s vacation Bible camp held Aug. 17-21; dedicated volunteers from Rivers United and Baptist churches helped make it another successful camp.

Congratulations to Rivers United Church congregation member Marg Taylor, who celebrated her 99th birthday on Aug. 30! A resident of Riverdale Personal Care Home, she was treated to a small family supper at daughter JoAnn Brandon’s house. Her church family wishes her continued good health, happiness and God’s blessing!

With the days getting shorter and the calendar turned up for September, it seems the season of autumn is upon us. There are many exciting upcoming events scheduled for Rivers United Church, so I encourage you to mark down these dates; you won’t want to miss anything!

Many committees will be reconvening this month. Outreach and Pastoral Care has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m., followed by the Worship Committee meeting at 7 p.m. As well, Joint Needs Assessment Committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Sept. 8.

Rev. Glenna Beauchamp will be officiating a church service at Riverdale Personal Care Home on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend and worship with the residents there.

Sunday, Sept. 13 is sure to be a fun-filled day. Sunday school begins a new year and all children are invited to attend. Leaders Shelley Foster and Becky Stewart have been busy planning lessons, activities, games and snacks. We will also enjoy our first ever Sundae Sunday! Ice cream sundaes complete with a variety of ice cream, frozen yogurt, toppings, fruit, whipped cream, sprinkles and even cherries on top will be served after worship. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

A six-week session of yoga will begin on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. This falls perfectly in place with the end of golf season and in preparation for the upcoming curling season. Lyndsay Gillon will be instructing the hour-long classes. Pre-registration is encouraged and for further information, please contact Dianne Kowalchuk at 204-328-7690.

Donations are being accepted for our fall indoor yard sale. Clothing, housewares, books, toys, home décor, sporting goods and knick-knacks can be dropped off at the church. Sale dates are Thursday and Friday, Sept. 24 and 25 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What’s your favourite kind of pie? Lemon meringue? Peach? Saskatoon? In conjunction with the yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 26, we will hold a pie sale, beginning at 10 a.m. We hope to have at least 60 pies for sale. Congregational members are asked to bake, donate and deliver pies to the church by 9:30 that morning. Some of Rivers’ prize-winning pie makers will be bringing their pies! Enjoy fresh or stock your freezer for Thanksgiving dinner. We expect the pies to sell very quickly!

If you are a recipient of Meals on Wheels, the friendly faces who deliver your meals in September will likely be members of Rivers United Church.

Convenors for this year’s fall supper on Sunday, Oct. 18 are Wayne and Karen Davies, Ian and Lorrie Dyer, Myles Wotton and Lori Kiesman.

Do you like trivia? What’s the fifth planet form the sun? Who played Radar in the popular MASH sitcom? How many sides does a trapezoid have? Rivers United will be hosting an open trivia night on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Much more information is to follow about this event, but in the meantime, study up! It is guaranteed to be lots of fun with hearty competition and most importantly, bragging rights will be on the line!

Worship services are held every Sunday at 11 a.m. and everyone is welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you. As the hymn writer John Manley wrote, “Come in, come in and sit down, you are a part of the family. We are lost and we are found and we are a part of the family.”
