The WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings have hired David Anning as the team's new assistant coach for the balance of the 2012-2013 season.
Anning, from Winnipeg, was serving as an assistant coach and general manager of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Steinbach Pistons. He is scheduled to join the club on Sunday.
Before joining Steinbach, Anning, 27, spent two years with the MJHL's Winnipeg Saints as their head coach and general manager, leading the team this past season to the MJHL final a year ago.
"David is a top young coach that will be a good addition to our organization," said McCrimmon in a release. "He has experience as an assistant coach, head coach as well as experience with Hockey Canada's under-16 and 17 programs."
Anning joins head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk, assistant Ritchie and goaltending coach Brent Zelenewich on the club's coaching staff. Anning is expected to work primarily with the defence, while Ritchie will return to a role similar to last season where he worked with the forwards.
"It's a great honour to join the Wheat Kings organization and I'm excited to get started," said Anning. "I would like to thank Kelly, Dwayne and the Wheat Kings for affording me this opportunity."
Anning also was the head coach with Team Manitoba at the Western Canada Under-16 Challenge Cup in Moose Jaw last fall and will be the assistant coach with Team West at the 2013 World Under-17 Challenge.
As a player, he played four seasons for the Saints, scoring 26 goals and 135 points.
