Rossburn Elementary School received a $3,000 grant to implement an edible trees project on behalf of Tree Canada.

The school has had plans to establish a variety of fruit trees to create an edible park on 8,400 square feet of public reserve within the residential development for a while now and this grant will help them achieve that goal.

During the implementation, the school will include the different stages of growing into the curriculum (including but not limited to pollination, growing/seasons of the fruit trees, environmental benefits and climate change adaption). Once the orchard is producing fruits, the school will work together with seniors groups to learn about preserving fruits and harvesting. While it is a public orchard, the school and the interested senior groups will be working out a public schedule for harvesting opportunities.

The school won the grant after an application process which included more than 100 applicants and only 20 award winners.

The tree planting date is set for Sept. 10. The Upper Assiniboine River Conservation District, among others will be on hand to help guide and teach the school kids how to properly plant the trees.

The RM and town of Rossburn have a combined population of about 1,100 people. Being situated at the southwest corner of the Riding Mountain National Park and having several gorgeous lakes, the area has, in the last few years, seen several lake and cottage developments.
