For the past 10 years Manitoba’s premier has presented Volunteer Service Awards during National Volunteer Week, this year April 12-18. The awards were established in co-operation with Volunteer Manitoba to “honour the efforts and dedication of outstanding volunteers in Manitoba, and to recognize and encourage the valuable services performed by volunteers,” states the provincial website. Awards are presented to youth, individuals and community groups. Approximately 200 nominations were submitted this year and among the 10 winners are five individuals, one of whom is Rivers’ own Donna Morken. Nominated by Krsita Reynolds, she included the following in her five-page application.

All is well in Riverdale

By Mayor Todd Gill

The first quarter of the newly-formed Riverdale Municipality has come to pass. For those readers who have been out of the loop, Town of Rivers and RM of Daly officially amalgamated to become Riverdale Municipality as of Jan. 1 of this year. Future articles of history will speak of the last days of the incorporated Town of Rivers and the incorporated Municipality of Daly. But when our identity is compromised by the actions of others – particularly government – creating uncertainty of who we are and where we stand, that is deeply hurtful. I can’t think of a time in recent memory where that was more apparent than during the process of municipal amalgamation.

The April 13 meeting of Rivers Legion was called to order by president Darryl Childerhose; 13 members were present. News was received that curling and eight ball were dropped from Legion sports at the dominion level because of changes in sponsorship. They will still continue locally and as far as provincial command, so there won’t be any major disruption at the local branch level.
