Effective immediately, Assiniboine Community College will not be accepting new applications for the two-year practical nursing program in Brandon.

With over 180 applications on the Brandon wait list, the college has enough qualified applicants to fill the program for the next two years.

“ACC’s practical nursing program has always been a high demand program with wait lists at all sites,” said Karen Hargreaves, ACC Dean of the school of health and human services in a release. "The critical need for practical nurses throughout the province is high and employment within the profession is increasing. There are opportunities to work in various areas including acute care, the emergency room, the operating room and dialysis.”

Currently, ACC has the capacity to accept 190 new practical nursing students each year. Seventy of these students are accepted in Brandon, 70 are accepted in Winnipeg, and the remainder at two rural rotating sites throughout the province.

The college suspended applications for the Winnipeg training centre in August of 2010 with enough applications to fill the program for three years.
