The Dispatch - ‘The driver decided to take off on police’

On Sept. 8, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Neepawa RCMP observed a vehicle travelling on road 84N in the RM of Minto-Odanah. The male driver was known to police to operate a motor vehicle while disqualified in the past. The vehicle was stopped and it was confirmed that the male was in fact prohibited from driving in Canada. 

The male was arrested and upon a search of his person, a prescription bottle was located. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the pills located inside the bottle were different than the prescription listed on the bottle. As a result, Leonard Maksymic has been charged with driving a motor vehicle while disqualified and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. 

On Sept. 27, at approximately 5:15 p.m., Neepawa RCMP responded to a complaint of a break and enter near Katrime. It was reported that both a garage and residence were entered. Upon entry into the residence, the suspect(s) went through drawers and scattered items all over the residence. 

Items stolen from the residence include a Panasonic 48” flat screen television, Playstation 3, Toshiba laptop, Apple iPhone 5s and approximately $500 in cash. No suspects have been identified. Neepawa RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in solving this crime and anyone with information on the Break and Enter are asked to contact their local police agency.

On Oct. 1, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Neepawa RCMP were patrolling on Provincial Road 265 in the RM of Rosedale. Police came upon a vehicle that was being driven without registration. A traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle came to a stop. Upon police approaching the vehicle, the driver decided to take off on police. Police followed the vehicle to a farm yard and arrested the female driver. 

The female driver chose to resist police upon the arrest, but was taken into custody without any difficulties. Jennifer Allston, of Winnipeg, was subsequently charged with flight from police, obstruction, resist arrest and a number of charges under the highway traffic act.

On Oct. 5, at approximately 2 p.m., Neepawa RCMP responded to a three vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 5 and Road 88N. A pickup truck was travelling east on 88N, attempting to cross Highway 5, when it collided with a S.U.V travelling northbound on Highway 5. The S.U.V rolled once on the highway and just managed to avoid another collision with a southbound semi. 

The male driver of the pickup, 30, of Neepawa, was not injured in the collision. The male driver of the semi, 54, was also not injured. The female driver of the S.U.V, 59, was taken to Neepawa hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol was not considered a factor in the collision.

On Oct. 9, at approximately 1 p.m., Neepawa RCMP conducted a controlled drug and substance act (CDSA) search warrant at a residence in the 300 block of William Street in Neepawa. As a result of the search warrant, officers seized marijuana, drug paraphernalia and cash. One adult female, one female youth and one male youth were arrested on location. As a result, all three individuals have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.
