The grade one students in Mrs. MacPhee’s class at Hazel M. Kellington School in Neepawa are doing their part to make the world a greener place.

This month, students throughout the entire school are bringing in plastic grocery bags and Glenda MacPhee’s students have been sorting and counting them as part of Take Pride Manitoba’s recycling program.

The initiative started in Winnipeg and now many schools province-wide are taking part. MacPhee is the teacher that initiated the program at HMK,and she and her students have already collected over 1,000 plastic bags. Last year, they collected over 8,000.

MacPhee says her students really enjoy counting and sorting all the bags.

“They love it,” she affirms. “It’s a great counting experience for the kids.”

The school will also be entered into a draw with other participating schools and will get a chance to win some new benches.

HMK has been involved with the plastic bag recycling program for five years now and MacPhee thinks it helps raise environmentally aware children.

“You have to start when they’re little,” she notes. “If we don’t start educating them at this stage then they’re not necessarily going to understand it.”

Parents can send bags to school with their children, and others can call the school to arrange a time to drop their bags off.
