Rapid City 4-H achievement results

Rapid City 4-H Beef Club held its achievement on June 25, in conjunction with the annual fair. The day commenced with participating in the parade, where the club won first; way to go, kids! Classes started in the morning with Darby Cochrane as judge; Darcy Hickson was show announcer; Christopher Hillis and Joey Bootsman, both former members, were ring person and show marshal respectively; Rana Reid was our photographer.

The morning began with grooming classes; Darby walked around the kids and asked them questions as they were fitting their animals prior to entering the ring. Once in the ring, he placed them as he saw fit and made comments; results were: senior, Drew Horner first, James Reid second; intermediate, Wyatt Inglis first, Thijs VandeLangemheen second, Gavin Reid third; junior, Brooklyn Hedley first, Mona VandeLangemheen second, Justin McKee third, Anja VandeLangemheen fourth; cloverbud, Sierra Inglis first, Zane Finlay second; senior showmanship, Drew and James in first and second; intermediate showmanship, Wyatt, Gavin and Thijs; junior showmanship Brooklyn, Justin, Mona and Anja; cloverbud showmanship, Seirra and Zane.

Morning classes finished with a break for lunch; members met in the ring for a group picture and the following presentations were made: five-year certificates to James and Gavin Reid; six-year seals to Wyatt and Thijs; 10-year seal to Drew; 12-year leader seal to Alan Horner and 24-year leader seal to Deb Inglis.

A judging showmanship clinic was held at Alan’s on May 15 where members got a few tips on showmanship and judged a class of market steers. The day ended with a barbecue potluck lunch, which was enjoyed by all. Results of the judging are as follows: senior, Drew and James; intermediate, Wyatt, Thijs and Gavin; junior, Brooklyn, Anja, Sierra, Justin, Mona and Zane.

Drew received the Grant Moffat Leadership Award, which is sponsored by Rapid City 4-H Beef Club; he also won best beef animal on the grounds at fair day. 

Bernice Dymtriw marked project books and declared the following winners: Drew and James, senior; Wyatt, Gavin and Thijs, intermediate; Sierra, Brooklyn, Justin, Anja and Mona, junior; Zane, cloverbud.

Afternoon classes commenced with future 4-H members; six kids ranging from age three to five entered the rink with a baby calf to show off their skills. This class shows there is a future in the agriculture business and the 4-H Beef program. They received a rosette and prize money; it was a crowd pleaser! Good job to the following: Aklen Abey, Jayda Carpenter, Chance Inglis, Madison Nykolation, Averie van Meijl, Graycen van Meijl.

Conformation classes began with the following results: progeny market steer, champion, Drew, reserve champion, Thijs; market steer, champion, Drew, reserve, Wyatt, third to sixth placings to Sierra, Brooklyn, Justin and Thijs. The top two progeny and market steers entered the ring to determine grand and reserve champion steers, giving to Drew and Wyatt respectively. Drew also won the best home-raised market steer. Highest average daily gain (ADG) prizes, from first weight day to achievement, were presented to Thijs and his animal with an ADG of 3.86 pounds, Sierra and ADG of 3.72, Justin ADG of 3.52 and Drew AGD of 3.38. The best steer shown by a member 14 years and under, excluding champion and reserve, went first to Sierra then Brooklyn, Justin and Thijs. 

Zane had the champion beginning beef, Sierra the reserve champion; champion progeny heifer was James, reserve was Gavin; champion yearling heifer was Drew, reserve was Sierra with Brooklyn, Wyatt, Thijs, Mona, Anja and Justin falling in line third to eighth. The top two progeny and yearling heifers competed for grand and reserve, which were won by Drew and James. Drew also won the best home-raised yearling heifer.

Wyatt was champion continuation, James was reserve champion and Thijs placed third in this class.

Supreme female, which is open to champion yearling heifer, champion continuation and champion beginning beef (if a heifer) was awarded to Wyatt and his continuation animal.

The last class of the day was the champion pair of yearling calves from one family; Drew was champion while Wyatt and Sierra were reserve; Brooklyn was third, Anja and Mona fourth, Justin fifth and the Reid boys sixth.

Another achievement has come to a close; the club appreciates the support we receive from members, parents, sponsors and individuals. Hope to see you next year!
