At the March 5 meeting of Rivers and District Chamber of Commerce, members learned some exciting news. Rivers Curling Club will be hosting the two-week Junior Canola Curling event at Riverdale Community Centre next January, and Sportsnet TV has agreed to broadcast the finals held on Sunday.

The event is so large that for the first time in Rivers’ history, the hockey ice will be converted to curling ice so eight sheets may be in play at one time. No doubt more information will be forthcoming in the months ahead about this major event.

Workers for Brandon Home Show April 10-12 were finalized. Members agreed to purchase seeds from Rivers Home Hardware as free handouts at the trade fair. We will also offer two $25 Chamber Buck certificates and some free golf at the Riverdale course just west of town. The booth will feature a fall theme to help promote the annual home and craft sale, this year held on Sept. 19. Applications for the show will be provided to those who may be interested in attending the 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. event.

A letter will be sent to Riverdale Municipality asking for a donation toward the cost of repairing/replacing highway signs that encourage travellers to stop in Rivers. There are four signs at Highways 24, 10 and 1 and currently, chamber funds are such that not even three could be paid for before draining the bank account. This project has been discussed for more than a year, so it’s quite likely costs have increased since the original quote of $2,000 per sign.

At the close of the noon hour meeting at Lee’s Restaurant, members were reminded the next gathering is Wednesday, April 15. The change in date is necessary because of the restaurant closure
