Fewer crimes in Rivers in February

Rivers Police Service has compiled its monthly statistics report and the three Criminal Code categories saw a total of seven cases, versus 11 recorded in January. Some of this may be due to fewer days in this shortest month of the year, but we like to believe it’s because citizens are more well behaved. Only one violent crime (assault) was lodged while we had three in January (two assault and one sexual offence). There were four property crimes, all at theft over $5,000; January had five thefts and one property damage. The “other crimes” were consistent with January at two cases; both months they were for various other crimes such as breaches, public mischief, harassing phone calls, etc.

Only one provincial traffic charge was made in the Other Highway Traffic Act category which could include speeding, unregistered vehicle, driving without a licence, etc.; January had five charges in this category. February also had five accidents reported, versus eight in the previous month. Total traffic statistics for February were six, compared to 13.

Liquor and Gaming Control Act charges were cut in half from two in January to one in February, all three were in the intoxicated person/breach of peace category.

Rivers Police Service was not called once to enforce any of the four bylaws: nuisance, animal, burning and traffic; in January we had four animal calls.

We travelled to the former RM of Daly on two calls, much like we did in January. The total number for assisting other agencies in February were these two calls; in January we made two Daly calls and three other assists for five acts of help.

In January police dealt with 49 miscellaneous cases; February was drastically reduced with only 14 crimes: one missing person, one alarm, one lost property and 11 miscellaneous events which includes unfounded complaints.

Overall, the health of our community is improving, for January had a total of 84 records (more than two a day) while February saw only 30 (slightly more than one a day).
