RCMP West District traffic services apprehended some incredibly fast drivers on Westman highways during Canada Road Safety Week.

The traffic services unit, with officers located in Virden and Dauphin, issued 145 traffic tickets, including 126 for speeding. Six of these speeders were travelling more than 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit.

On the evening of May 15, an 18-year-old female from Melville, Sask. was fined $941.75 for travelling 166 kilometres per hour on Hwy. 1 near Carberry.

On the evening of May 16, four significant speeders were charged:

• A 24-year-old male from Regina, Sask. was caught travelling 168 kilometres per hour  on Hwy. 1 west of Brandon. He also had an expired driver’s licence and an improperly restrained four-year-old. He was released on recognizance to appear in Brandon court on June 16. He was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle as well as driving without a licence and failing to properly restrain a child.

• A 20-year-old male from High River, Alta. was charged for driving 158 kilometres per hour  on Hwy. 1 near Oak Lake and was fined $809.50.

• A 59-year-old male from RM of Keys, Sask. was fined $863.50 for travelling 164 kilometres per hour  while passing several vehicles on Hwy. 16 west of Minnedosa.

• A 54-year-old male from Fairford, Man. was fined $914.75 and charged with careless driving for travelling 126 kilometres per hour  in a 60 kilometres per hour  zone in the RM of Alonsa.

• On the afternoon of May 18, a 26-year-old male from Carnduff, Sask. was caught travelling 182 kilometres per hour on Hwy. 21 south of Griswold; he had a four-year-old child with him. He was released on a recognizance and will appear in Virden court on June 20. He was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle.

• Two drivers were also charged for impaired driving and two more were issued road-side suspensions ranging from 24 hours to 15 days.

Four people were killed over the past week on Manitoba roads. In all four collisions, victims were not wearing a seatbelt; alcohol is believed to be a factor in one of the four. Speeding or driving too fast for road conditions continues to be a factor in most collisions. Please make smart choices when getting behind the wheel: drive sober, buckle up and focus on the road.
