Murray House in Brandon, a residence that provides safe, comfortable accommodations for out-of-town patients receiving care at the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre, has officially opened its doors.

Under the direction of the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation (BRHC), the "A Sense of Home" fundraising campaign was launched in September 2011 with a commitment to building this residence.

“We believed so passionately in this project, and to see it come to fruition is very moving,” said Laurie Murray, co-chair of the BRHC Foundation “The community’s generosity of spirit will now help those going through their cancer journey, and it has been a privilege to be part of something so special.”

Along with a large donation from the Murray family and their automotive dealerships, the project received its name the "Murray House". Within 14 months, the foundation had met its goal and more, giving $2.85 million to Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) for construction, including landscaping, furniture, consulting fees and taxes. The residence is conveniently located within walking distance to the Cancer Centre.

PMH will now oversee the annual operating and maintenance at the facility, which features eight private rooms with bathrooms, kitchen, living room, library/meeting room and recreation room.

A ribbon cutting ceremony followed by public tours will take place on Tuesday, May 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Murray House located at 521 Frederick Street. Free parking will be available in the front lot of the Brandon Regional Health Centre and the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre lot.
