The Father’s Pantry hosted its fifth annual Easter 'Meal in the Park' on Friday. The event saw a total of 247 hot meals and more than 160 sandwiches handed out to the poor, hungry, less fortunate and homeless at the Youth for Christ Building in Brandon.

The meal was provided at no charge to people in Brandon with minimal income. This event was in conjunction with the Loaves and Fishes program which is held every Saturday throughout the year, which provides groceries and fresh produces to families on the weekend as the soup kitchen is only open on weekdays.

On the Easter weekend there are four days where the soup kitchen and similar outlets are closed and access to free nutritious food is minimized.  Traditionally the meal is served at Princess Park, but due to the cold weather experienced this winter, it was decided that it would be held at the Youth for Christ building where people would enjoy warm surroundings with their Easter meal.

The Father’s Pantry Inc. is a Christian based organization of volunteers with no paid staff who rely entirely on the community giving donations. Some of the sponsors are Bethel Christian Assembly, Blue Hills Bakery, Komfort Kitchen, Waldersee Christ Lutheran Church, city of Brandon, Wilfred Baer (Sidney), Super Store, Canada Safeway, Brandon Vineyard Christian Assembly, Kuipers Bakery, Sobeys, and individuals from within the community.

Any overabundance of food is shared with Samaritan House, Helping Hands, Rivers – Loaves + Fishes Program, Friendship drop-in Centre, Master’s Moms (Bethel Christian Assembly), Teen Challenge, Joy Smith Foundation Against Human Trafficking, and any other individuals who are in need.
