When you live in a small town, it’s easy to get the idea that you’re somehow immune from the bias, prejudice and racism you see in the big cities. So, when you wake up one morning to discover that sometime during the previous night, a person (or persons) unknown spray-painted offensive language on one sign, one new sidewalk and two buildings in your town, you sit up, take note and start thinking: “I guess it can happen here.”

Two weeks ago, Statistics Canada released its latest report: “Police Reported Hate Crimes in Canada—2015.” Its contents should concern every Canadian. According to the report, hate crimes against identifiable groups in this country are increasing, and Canada’s Muslim community is seeing the biggest increase (almost double the number reported in 2014).

As a public speaker, Ronald Reagan was hard to beat. His speeches were carefully worded. They may not have been short; many were not sweet; but they were always to the point. He did not hide behind fancy rhetoric. He did not leave his hearers guessing as to his intent. To use a modern phrase, he stood up, he spoke up and when he was done, he shut up.
