There’s an old saying that’s a favourite with investment counsellors and financial managers. “If a deal looks too good to be true,” the saying reads, “it probably is.”That’s another way of saying that in this life, there is no such thing as a shortcut to financial security. There’s no pot of gold at the end of a rainbow; no investment that, in return for a $1,000 deposit will guarantee you $10,000 a month for life; no combination of numbers that will get you consecutive lottery wins.

Someone showed me some pictures of a recent sunset. The flaming red and fiery orange melted over in a bright yellow. It was spectacular. The sunsets on the prairies are beautiful. I could stop on the side of road and just watch this mighty ball disappear behind the far horizon. It makes me stop and think “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

As I get older, I find that it takes considerably longer to write a column, prepare a sermon, write a letter or decide what to say in a greeting card. I spend much more time thinking before I ever sit down at my desk and actually begin to put words on paper. My goal is simple—I want my writing to be easily understood and my sermons to be given in ways that reflect the love, acceptance and forgiveness God offers to all who believe in Him. I would like to think that this is a sign of wisdom that comes with age; but I am sure there will be some who might want to question that. One thing is certain—I am becoming more critical and increasingly skeptical when it comes to the claims some preachers make in their sermons.

One of my favourite sayings goes like this: “If you ever stop learning, you stop growing; and the moment you stop growing is the moment you start dying.” We begin learning about life from the moment we are born. Parents, teachers and others guide us through the adjustments that we must make as we move through each stage of life. The process is not without its rough spots, as we all know. And it doesn’t end until the day we die.

A friend came to visit me and stayed for a few days. She had to bring her own bed and bedding which she gladly did. Someone said that this was a real friend. We had fun together, played games and it made the time fly by. I’m sure everybody has those precious friends who put everything aside and come for a visit.
