The sale of recreational cannabis in Manitoba will take place in private businesses, but will be controlled by the provincial government. This hybrid retail and distribution model was announced by Manitoba premier Brian Pallister on Nov. 7.

Province unveils green plan alternative

Acknowledging the need to address climate change, last week, the provincial government released their climate and green plan. In announcing the plan, premier Brian Pallister and Sustainable Development minister Rochelle Squires stressed that this “Made in Manitoba” solution would meet the needs of Manitobans, while also reducing the province’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The number of unexpected and unwanted run-ins with wildlife are on the increase across the province. According to data gathered by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), over the past five years, Manitobans have reported an average of 11,000 crashes per year involving animals. That has resulted in more than 300 injuries every year, costing about $41 million annually in property damage.

On May 5, 2017, Spruce Plains RCMP received a call regarding a semi travelling south on Highway 5 that was all over the road and approaching Neepawa. Police located the vehicle on Highway 16 near Minnedosa and initiated a traffic stop. Upon speaking with the male driver, police noted the smell of alcohol. The driver was detained for an impaired operation investigation and provided a sample of breath into a roadside screening device, which resulted in a fail. Two samples of breath were obtained from the driver, with results of 120 mg per cent and 110 mg per cent. As a result, Casey Larson, of Otter Lake, was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The matter has been dealt with before the courts and a fine of $1,400 was issued.

A provincial election is set for Manitoba on Tuesday, April 19 and on Tuesday, April 5, Rapid City’s chamber of commerce hosted a candidate’s evening. The Green Party accepted Mark Olenick’s registration on March 25 so considering he had only 10 days to prepare vs. three months the Liberal and PC candidates have had, he provided excellent answers. The atmosphere was positive, due in part to the NDP candidate of Winnipeg being unable to attend. Approximately 65 people attended the two hour debate.
