There will be some who say the comparison is extreme. Fair enough. But to counter that complaint, there are hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of people in Canada that don’t understand the comparison and how it could affect Canada, or more specifically Manitoba.

This week, we celebrated Canada Day. In 1867, Canada was established as a self-governing dominion, an autonomous region under the British crown, through the British North America Act. The document created the federal and provincial levels of government, as well as the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. In the subsequent years, we would see our country grow and change shape, but literally and figuratively.

Canada is at a crossroads with the upcoming federal election. At this point, there are only really two choices for government and for prime minister. The NDP and Thomas Mulcair and the Conservative Party of Canada and Stephen Harper.

There has been some very preliminary discussion about Social Impact Bonds. The PC party of Manitoba, under the leadership of Brian Pallister, is stating that socially progressive projects should be financed by way of private money through Social Impact Bonds. Social Impact Bonds (SIBs)are an idea that has started to emerge in Great Britain and apparently one project has developed in Saskatchewan. It’s a way of allowing private money to flow into projects and programs that meet a social need within the province.
