In the last year, a couple of pro football players have been in the news, for their parenting tactics, of all things. It started nine months ago with Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison’s post on Instagram, in which he explained that he returned trophies given to his sons, because they were participation awards. On May 11, Harrison’s teammate, DeAngelo Williams, posted a photo of his daughter with three ribbons. In the post, he explained, “I took her Field Day participation ribbon & gave it back to her teacher...then in the next event she got 1st place.”

It’s hard to believe, but the Kia Sportage is actually the longest serving model in Kia’s range, having been around since 1993. In fact, it pre-dates segment bestsellers such as Ford Escape, Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 by as much as seven years! In the early days, it was viewed as a budget alternative to those vehicles, but now in its 24th year, the all-new fourth generation 2017 Kia Sportage looks and feels like an upscale product inside and out and aims to hit the competition where it hurts.

This coming weekend, both the Liberal Party of Canada and the Conservative Party of Canada are holding policy conventions. The Liberals are in Winnipeg and the Conservatives are in Vancouver. Ironically, both are debating membership fees. The Libs are possibly going to make membership free and the Conservatives have been debating raising the annual fee to somewhere near the actual cost of processing the membership.

Last weekend, I ended up spending a few hours digging through some family history. It was an interesting trip into photo albums, scrap books, envelopes of old pictures and newspaper clippings. Most were from well before my time and I wished I knew the answers to my questions; Who are all the people in the photos? Where and when was the photo taken? What was significant about the event? Without context, they were just interesting novelties.

It was an impressive scene to watch the parade of 40 new PC MLAs parade into their swearing-in ceremony last week. Not since 1915 had such a large group of MLAs from one party been sworn into government. The throne speech was impressive this past Monday, but was basically a re-stating of the PC election platform. A look at the seat map for the legislature shows the 40 PC seats, the 14 NDP and the three liberals in their seating arrangement. It’s a massive majority for the PC party and Premier Brian Pallister.
