Westman residents can be forgiven for forgetting that a provincial by-election just took place. While usually dull affairs, that wasn’t the case this time and the outcome could have an interesting impact on the province’s political future.

To hear politicians, voters and media talk about the attributes they admire in a leader, one would think that people want one who shows a high level of moral goodness. The leader should be happily married, have well-behaved children. They should have a successful career prior to entering politics. Once they get elected, they should be faithful to their spouse, never have stolen any money from anyone and be completely honest in every way.

Last week I was irritated to once again be unable to make a phone call travelling between Minnedosa and Brandon. Then I heard about the “upgrades” to mobile service in the Alonsa area.

Those are the questions that should be on everyone’s minds as the summer of 2018 rolls along. This is a municipal election year in Manitoba and it is time for all good people to be thinking about their town or municipal council and who will or should be on that council after election day.
