Before I go any further, let me say that it looks like I made a mistake in my column two weeks ago, writing about the number of deaths due to all causes in 2019 versus 2020. I quoted the figures accurately, but it was pointed out to me that the stats are reported from July 1 to June 30 so the 2020 figures I wrote about didn’t show the actual deaths for July 1, 2020 to Dec. 31, 2020. In other words, COVID-19 may have raised the actual number of death by more than the 120 or so it appeared to be. We won’t know until the stats are totalled.

The Winnipeg Sun summed up the new federal budget this way: “They’re planning to create a national day care program, increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour and throw billions of more dollars at pet ‘green’ projects, among other new gimmicks. We’re seeing the same attitude that led Trudeau to break his original promise of sticking to only ‘modest’ $10 billion deficits. Now we’re left with red ink as far as the eye can see.”

No matter how tough things are, it’s best to know the facts. There is no doubt that we have been through a tough time. COVID-19 has caused deaths, sickness, anxiety and fear. All those things are very real.

Last week, there was a story out about a lady in a care home who, even though she had been vaccinated, said she and her fellow residents were still largely confined to their rooms.
