Dozens of times per week we get various press releases. They are important in the newspaper industry. By way of press releases, we find out what governments are up to, what organizations have planned for programs or meetings, what local events might be happening and a whole host of other items.

The problem is a newspaper can’t live on printing press releases. A newspaper needs ads to survive. And surviving isn’t enough, a business needs to thrive, to pay the print bill, distiribution costs  and oh, yes, the staff.

This past week, Alberta’s premier Danielle Smith was sworn in, named her cabinet and presided over an AGM. She brought a lot of people into cabinet, among them her leadership rivals. She also laid down some rules for how to deal with Ottawa. Other than Quebec, no other province has been so vocal in their complaints about how they are treated by Ottawa.

The big day is coming–election day 2022. It’s our chance, once every four years, to select the politicians whose decisions most affect our daily lives. Municipal council rules, regulations and overall decisions have more effect on our lives than any other level of government.

Bad governance is simply the application of wrong information to decision making and decision implementation. No better recent example of bad governance has been displayed than by Hockey Canada. The news has been filled for months with how HC paid out millions in damages to an alleged sexual assualt victim, a young woman. I say alleged, not because I don’t believe the woman, but because charges were never laid by police, as far as I know and therefore not proven in court. All that said, I am fairly certain the alleged assault took place.

There is a sweeping change across the world. In general, there is a shift to what some might call ‘the right.” In Alberta, it looks like Danielle Smith will become premier of Alberta and that is definitely what you might easily call a shift further right. The recent election of Pierre Poillievre as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada is widely regarded as a shift to the right. Pierre crushed his opposition and the other parties, and Canada’s media are still wondering what happened. The Quebec election results gave the CAQ a huge win and that group is pretty hard line in opposition to traditional liberal or left wing views.
