Neepawa’s Brandt Young was one of three members of the Yellowhead Bantam Chiefs to be selected in the 2018 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft. On Thursday, May 3, the 15-year-old defensemen was chosen in the tenth round by the Spokane Chiefs.

After an exceptional career in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), former Neepawa Natives’ forward Ashton Anderson is ready to move on to the next stage of his life. That next stage will include some well-deserved support from the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba (IBAM)/MJHL scholarship program.

The NACI varsity girls fast-pitch team won the B-Side final at the Saints Classic in Portage la Prairie on Friday, May 4.

The NACI Tigers varsity fast-pitch team had a tremendous weekend in Portage la Prairie, winning the B-Side bracket at the annual Saints Classic tournament. The event is one of the biggest fast-pitch events of the year, featuring 16 of the best clubs from all across the province. 

NACI found themselves in a tough draw during the round robin portion of the weekend; with Major Pratt (Brandon), Morden and Prairie Mountain (Somerset) serving as the early competition. The Tigers put in a solid performance, going 2-1 in the preliminaries. They defeated Morden by the score of 5-3 and Prairie Mountain with 7-6 decision. Their lone defeat was a 13-12 loss to Major Pratt. That single loss was enough to shift NACI into the B-Side playoff.

In the playoff, Neepawa subdued Martin Collegiate 7-3 and then moved on to outlast the Virden Bears in the final 10-9. As for the A-Side, it was the Garden Valley Zodiacs who claimed top spot, defeating Boissevain 4-3.

Kaitlyn Lawes to headline Minnedosa Sports Dinner

The Minnedosa and District Recreation Commission has secured a world-class athlete for the this year’s edition of its Sports Dinner. It has been confirmed that curler and multiple Olympic gold medalist Kaitlyn Lawes will headline the event, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 20.

Santa Clara Baseball League schedule announced

The boys of summer are back, as the Santa Clara Baseball League (SCBL) has announced its 2018 schedule. There will be eight clubs competing in the SCBL this season, playing one another twice over the course of the year. The regular season will end on July 4, with the playoffs beginning shortly thereafter.
