The following is a complete look-back on what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .
MSBL schedule released: Farmers begin season in Brandon
The Manitoba Senior Baseball League regular season schedule was released over the weekend.
The 20-game season gets underway on Friday, May 24 and will include the Neepawa Farmers beginning their year with a road contest against the Brandon Cloverleafs, while the Brandon Marlins travel to Reston to take on the Rockets.
Game times for games from Monday to Saturday will begin at 7 p.m., while Sunday contests will start at 6 p.m.
Double headers on Sunday meanwhile, will begin at 2 and 6 p.m. respectively.
Winterhawks win WHL title
The Portland Winterhawks are this year's Western Hockey League champions after defeating the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-1 in Game 6 of the WHL final on Sunday.
The Winterhawks, who lost in both the 2011 and 2012 WHL finals, claimed a 4-2 best-of-seven series win over the defending WHL champion Oil Kings with their Game 6 triumph.
Ty Rattie scored three times for the Hawks, including his 20th goal of the 2013 WHL playoffs, in the series-clinching win.
Rattie, a St. Louis Blues prospect, was named the MVP of the WHL championship series. The 19-year-old ended the post-season with 20 goals and 36 points in 21 games.
Seven Brandon boxers win provincial titles
Seven members of the Brandon Boxing Club who took part in the provincial amateur boxing championship in Winnipeg over the weekend were victorious.
Giselle Szczepanski defeated Winnipeg's Kristen Hudson by unanimous decision to win the novice middleweight title, while T.J. Flett ended up having to beat two boxers to win his senior light heavyweight championship belt.
Five other competitors ended up winning by walkover, which means they didn't have anyone else in their class: Isiah Hayden is the junior middleweight champion, Natasha Armstrong won the junior bantamweight belt, Amy Coveney won the senior lightweight belt, Rodman Batson won the senior middleweight class, while Scott Gallinger-Ho is the novice welterweight champion.
Hayden and Armstrong advance to compete in the junior national championships in Montreal in November. Flett, Batson and Coveney meanwhile will compete in the senior national championships in Regina in October.
Tigers 1-1 over weekend in Prairie West
The Neepawa Tigers played two games on Sunday in the Prairie West High School Baseball League.
The Tigers began the day with a 9-8 loss to Virden. Shane Levandosky went 3-for-5 with two runs for Neepawa in the loss.
The Tigers then took on Hamiota and wound up winning by a 9-1 score.
Riley Kolesar played a key role in the victory, as he had a pair of singles at the plate. He also struck out three batters in three innings of work on the mound to pick up the win.
The Tigers now sit with a 2-3 record.
Tigers win medals at Nike Grand Prix
Four members of the Neepawa Collegiate track team came away with medals at the Nike Grand Prix national track meet in Toronto over the weekend.
Lynden Middleton won a gold medal in the boys long jump event, finishing with a best jump of 6.09 metres.
Wyatt Salmon won a silver medal in the boys 200 metre event, while Logan Young took home a bronze in the boys 1500 metre.
Lastly, Nick Noonan-Robinson and his team finished in first place in the 4x100-metre relay. Robinson and the rest of the Neepawa track team was split up at the event.
Bobcats announce recruit
The Brandon University men's basketball team announced they have added Mikee Dosado to their backcourt for next season.
The 5-foot-10 point guard spent the past three seasons at the collegiate level in Quebec. He won the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national title in 2011 with Vanier College.
Westman volleyball club ends up with silver
The Westman girls volleyball club ended up winning a silver medal at the national club volleyball championship in Edmonton over the weekend.
The Westman club lost a straight sets decision to the Montreal Celtique in the tier 1 under-18 final.
