The following is a complete look-back on what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Tigers win second consecutive provincial crown; Neepawa JV girls fall in provincial final

The Neepawa Tigers won their second straight AA provincial high school hockey championship, defeating the host Carman Cougars 4-1 in the championship final on Saturday afternoon.

Tigers forward Garett Rempel was named the players choice award winner and was also named the tourney MVP at the event.

Forward Kyle McDonald, defenceman Cody James and goaltender Grant Graham of the Tigers were named tourney all-stars as well.

Meanwhile, the Neepawa Tigers fell to Teulon 60-50 in the A/AA provincial high school junior varsity girls basketball championship final in Winnipeg on Saturday.

MJHL playoffs underway

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs got underway over the weekend.

The Dauphin Kings saw their lengthy winning streak come to a close as they dropped a 3-2 decision in triple overtime to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in Game 2 of their Sher-Wood Division best-of-seven semifinal on Sunday night.

The Kings beat the Wolverines 3-2 in Game 1 of the series on Friday night.

Meanwhile, the OCN Blizzard lead the Swan Valley Stampeders 1-0 in the other Sher-Wood semifinal series. The Blizzard defeated the Stamps 2-1 on Saturday night.

In the Addison Division, the Steinbach Pistons lead 2-0 in their series against the defending champion Portage Terriers, while the Winnipeg Blues are up 2-0 in their series against the Winkler Flyers.

 

Wheat Kings fall to Oil Kings. Broncos

The struggles continue for the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, who are in the midst of playing out their string of regular season games.

On Friday night, the Wheat Kings fell to the Edmonton Oil Kings by a score of 3-2 at Westman Communications Group Place in Brandon.

Nick Buonassisisi and Tim McGauley scored the two goals for Brandon in a losing cause.

On Saturday, the Wheat Kings hosted the Swift Current Broncos and ended up losing 3-2.

Eric Roy and Geordie Maguire scored for Brandon, who will not make the playoffs and remain in last place in the Eastern Conference with a 22-39-4-4 record.

The last time the Wheat Kings missed the playoffs was in 1999-2000.

 

Curling: Carberry's Braden Calvert wins U-18 championship; Jacobs defeats Stoughton in final; Dunstone wins bronze

Braden Calvert's Carberry rink took home this year's provincial under-18 men's curling title on Sunday.

Calvert edged Matt Dunstone's West Kildonan rink -- which was being skipped by Cole Peters -- by a score of 9-8 in the championship final in Ste. Anne.

Hannah Brown's Pembina rink won the under-18 women's title, defeating Raina Syrnyk of Gilbert Plains 12-6 in the final.

Meanwhile, Brad Jacobs and his Northern Ontario rink won this year's Brier on Sunday, defeating Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton and his team 11-4 in the national men's curling final in Edmonton.

Jacobs, third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden will represent Canada at the Ford World Men’s Curling Championship from March 30 to April 7.

Lastly, Manitoba's Matt Dunstone won a bronze medal over the weekend at the World Junior Men's Curling Championship in Sochi, Russia.

Dunstone's team defeated Sweden in the third-place game on Sunday.

 

Nichols, Mead named all-stars

Lead Mark Nichols and third Jon Mead of Jeff Stoughton's Manitoba rink were named Brier all-stars on Saturday night.

Nichols was named a first team all-star lead, while Mead was named a second team all-star third.

 

Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League: Wheat Kings down 2-1 to Thrashers

The Brandon Wheat Kings are down 2-1 in their Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League semifinal against the Winnipeg Thrashers.

The Thrashers scored two goals late in Game 3 to edge the Wheat Kings by a score of 5-4 in Winnipeg on Sunday.

Brett Kitt had a goal and an assist for Brandon, who defeated the Thrashers 5-3 on Friday night at the Sportsplex.

The Wheat Kings lost Game 1 to the Thrashers last Wednesday night by a score of 6-4.

Game 4 of the best-of-five series will take place Wednesday night at the Sportsplex. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Whoever wins the series will battle the Winnipeg Wild in the league final. The Wild swept the Pembina Valley Hawks in three straight games to advance to the final.

 

Farmers advance to Tiger Hills final

The Neepawa Farmers have advanced to the Tiger Hills Hockey League championship final.

Shane Jury had a hat-trick, helping the Farmers defeat the Carberry Plainsmen 8-1 on Sunday night in the fifth and deciding game of East Division final.

The Farmers will now take on the Souris Elks in the championship final.

Jets defeat Panthers; fall to Devils in shootout

The NHL's Winnipeg Jets earned three of a possible four points over the weekend.

Dustin Byfuglien scored the overtime winner as the Jets defeated the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Friday night. Blake Wheeler and Andrew Ladd also scored for Winnipeg in the win.

On Sunday, Patrik Elias netted the only shootout goal, helping the New Jersey Devils edge the Jets 3-2. Mark Stuart and Evander Kane netted the goals for Winnipeg, who now sit with a 12-11-2 record.

 

Canada falls at WBC

After a win over Mexico on Saturday, Team Canada was put in a must-win situation at the World Baseball Classic on Sunday afternoon. Canada held a 3-2 lead after seven innings, but ended up giving up seven runs in the last two innings, resulting in a 9-4 win by the U.S.A.

U.S.A. will advance to the next round, while Canada has been eliminated.

Justin Morneau hit an impressive .636 in three games for Canada, who lost to Italy earlier in the tournament.

Michael Saunders also played well for Canada, hitting .727 with four extra-base hits and seven RBI. He was eventually named MVP of Pool D.

 

Wildcats one win away from final

The Westman Wildcats defeated the Winnipeg Avros in their first two games of the best-of-five Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League semifinal.

The Wildcats defeated the Avros 5-1 on Friday night and followed that up with a 5-3 win on Saturday.
Game 3 of the series is set for Wednesday in Hartney.

The Avros made the semifinal after defeating the Yellowhead Chiefs in a quarter-final, while the Wildcats defeated the Winnipeg Ice.

In the other semifinal, Central Plains and Pembina Valley are currently tied at a game apiece. Game 3 is set for Monday night in Morden.
