The Neepawa Farmers couldn’t gain any ground in the Tiger Hills Hockey League (THHL) standings over the weekend, splitting a pair of games. First, they topped the Carberry Plainsmen 5-2 on Friday, Nov. 10 at home, but then fell to Cartwright by that identical 5-2 score, in a road game the following night.

During the home game on Remembrance Day, the first 40 minutes of action was a tight checking, defensive struggle. Ward Szucki scored the only goal for either side, early in the first, to make it 1-0 Neepawa. After that, both teams manned up on the blue lines and kept the opposition off the scoresheet.

In the third, both teams opened up offensively. First, just 1:45 into the period, Zeanan Zimmer put away an unassisted marker for the Plainsmen to tie things up at 1-1. Less than a minute later, Neepawa replied, as Bret Levandoski reclaimed the one goal lead for the Farmers. That was followed, in quick succession, by goals from Rhett Law, his first goal of the season and Matt Lowry, who secured his fourth of the year for a 4-1 cushion. Carberry’s Jonathan Davison scored one late for the Plainsmen, but that was quickly nullified by Cam Tibbett, who scored Neepawa’s fifth goal of the game, with just 11 seconds left in regulation.

Neepawa was hoping to follow up that strong effort at home with an equally impressive night in Cartwright on Saturday, Nov. 12. Unfortunately, it was the Clippers who closed out the evening on the winning end of a 5-2 decision. Tibbett and Kyle McDonald picked up the goals for the Farmers.

After the weekend, Neepawa’s regular season record stands at 2-3-0. That’s good enough for a tie for third place in the Eastern Division with Cartwright, though the Clippers win the tie breaker, due to the victory over the Farmers, as well as having played fewer games thus far this season. Neepawa’s next game is Friday, Nov. 18, in Boissevain against the Border Kings. The next home game is Sunday, Nov. 27, versus the Hartney Blues.
