Safeway Championship update: Day 1 wraps up

Day 1 of the Safeway men's provincial curling championship wrapped up on Wednesday night in Neepawa.

In Draw 3, former World champion Jeff Stoughton defeated Rene Kolly of Manitou 9-2, while fifth-seeded Terry McNamee of Brandon looked sharp in his first match defeating Shawn Magnusson of Riverton by a score of 8-5.

Along with Stoughton and McNamee, Dave Elias of West St.Paul, Trevor Loreth of West Kildonan and Brendan Taylor of Beausejour all advanced with wins on the A Side.

In Draw 4, Rae Kujanpaa of Dauphin defeated Scott Ramsay of Granite 4-3 in 10 ends, while Scott Madams of Fort Rouge beat Geoff Trimble of Gladstone by a score of 8-0.

Others winning in Draw 4 consisted of Travis Graham of Snow Lake, Wayne Ewasko of Beausejour and David Kraichy of Fort Rouge.

Both Neepawa rinks will play their second games on Thursday morning.

Jerry Chudley, who won his first game, will take on the defending champ Rob Fowler, while Kelly Robertson, who dropped his opening match, will go up against Bruce Jones of St. Vital.
