Stoughton No. 1 seed at Safeway Championship

Jeff Stoughton was named the top seed for the Safeway men's provincial curling championship at a media conference Tuesday morning.

Stoughton, from the Charleswood Curling Club, is a two-time world champion who recently won the National Grand Slam of Curling title, defeating Mike McEwen in the final.

McEwen, a Brandon product and his team from Fort Rouge will be the No. 2 seed at the event. McEwen has finished as the runner-up the past three Safeway events.

Brandon's Rob Fowler was unveiled as the No. 3 seed. Fowler and his team are the defending Safeway champions.

William Lyburn's rink from Deer Lodge and Terry McNamee and his team from Brandon are the fourth and fifth seeds respectively.

Sean Grassie (also from Deer Lodge) is the sixth seed, while Daley Peters of Gimli, Dave Elias of West Kildonan, Scott Ramsay of Granite and David Bohn of Assiniboine Memorial round out the top 10.

Other teams taking part in the event include Carberry's Rob Van Kommer, Deloraine's Blair Goethals and Neepawa's own Kelly Robertson and Jerry Chudley.

The Safeway Championship takes place Feb. 6-10 at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa.
