Chiefs top Northstars to start season

The Yellowhead Chiefs have begun the 2014-15 Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League season with a couple of home wins against the Norman Northstars.

Game one on Saturday, Oct 4 saw the Chiefs hold on to a 5-4 victory. Yellowhead forward Tucker Scantlebury lead the way scoring a hat trick in the first period. Riley Shamray scored in the second period, while Morgan Geekie notched the eventual game winner midway through the third. Brett Friesen stopped 26 of 30 shots on goal.

Yellowhead was able to get off to a much quicker start on Sunday, scoring six goals in the first period, including another early hat trick for Tucker Scantlebury. Brody Smith, Logan Young and Dylan Tanner also scored in the first frame.

In the second period, Dayton Heino tallied a short-handed goal. James Sytnyk and Derek Cross finished the scoring for the Chiefs with goal in the third period, as the game ended in a 9-1 victory. Riley Lamb started between the pipes for Yellowhead and stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced.

The next game action for the Chiefs is Friday, Oct 10 when they travel to Winnipeg to play the Thrashers and Oct 11 against the Winnipeg Wild.
