Minnedosa will be hosting a Badminton Manitoba summer camp later this summer.

The camp, which takes place July 21-25, is part of Badminton Manitoba's "Rural Summer Badminton Camps" and will include two players from Team Manitoba coming from Winnipeg to run the five-day event. Kids ranging in age from eight to 15 years-old are eligible to take part in the camp, which takes place at Tanner’s Crossing School Gym.

The event, which costs $140 for all five days, will focus on skill development, says Jolene Young, event coordinator and recreation director for the Town of Minnedosa. From 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the camp will focus on the ‘basics’ which will include working on single and double badminton skills and will also involve games each day and even a mini-tournament. There will also be a wind-up on the last day of camp.

"It's great to have badminton camps in rural Manitoba just like we have in Winnipeg,” said provincial coach Justin Friesen in a release. “Many of Manitoba's best athletes are from rural Manitoba and we should be taking advantage of that. If these rural camps take off, it could not only mean better badminton players rurally, but better athletes in general."

Minnedosa held a similar camp a year ago which included approximately 10 kids participating. Young is hopeful for somewhere between 12-14 kids attending the camp this year.

People can register and get more information about the camp at www.badminton.mb.ca. People can also contact Young at Minnedosa Recreation Office at 204-867-2250.

Registration deadline for the Minnedosa camp is June 20.

Other communities that will be hosting badminton camps include Souris (Aug. 25-29), Stonewall (July 28-Aug. 1) and Carman (Aug. 11-15).
