Weekend sports wrap: Tigers win consolation championship; Robertson off to solid start at Canadian seniors

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Tigers defeat Sabres to win consolation title

The Neepawa Tigers won the consolation title at the provincial AA girls high school basketball championship in Teulon over the weekend.

The Tigers defeated the Elton Sabres 69-45 in the consolation final on Saturday.

The No. 3 seeded Tigers, the Zone 7 winners this season, dropped to the consolation side after losing 64-55 to No. 6 seed Steinbach Christian in their first game on Thursday.

The Tigers then defeated Warren 56-33 on Friday morning before edging Carman 55-48 in the consolation semifinal that night.

The host Teulon Saints won the provincial title, defeating the Souris Sabres 69-39 in the final.

Turning to the boys side, it was the No. 1 seed Carman Cougars winning the provincial AA boys high school basketball championship, defeating the Boissevain Broncos 83-72 in the final.

Meanwhile, the No. 1 seeded Hamiota Huskies defeated the Glenboro Panthers 60-58 in the 'A' girls final. Shayna Mathison, a Brandon Bobcats recruit, ended up winning the MVP award with the Huskies.

On the boys side, top-seeded Glenboro edged the Pinawa Panthers 66-64 in the championship final.

Turning to the AAA provincials in Swan River, the No. 1 seed Virden Golden Bears won their first ever girls title, defeating the R.D. Parker Trojans 64-60 in the final.

The Brandon-based Neelin Spartans finished in third place, defeating the Lorette Scorpions 59-47 in the bronze medal game.

On the boys side, it was an all-Winnipeg matchup as the Westgate Wings defeated the St. John's Eagles 89-72 in the championship final.

Lastly, in the 4A provincials, both the boys and girls championship finals are set and will take place on Monday night in Winnipeg.

Both finals include Winnipeg-based schools as St. Paul's battles Glenlawn in the boys championship, while Sisler will take on Vincent Massey in the girls final.


Tigers take Game 1 of WHSHL final

The Neepawa Tigers are now one win away from winning the Westman High School Hockey League championship title.

The Tigers defeated the Major Pratt Trojans 5-2 in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship final series on Sunday afternoon in Russell.

Tigers captain Garett Rempel netted a hat-trick in the win, while Wyatt Salmon and Brett McKinnon scored the other goals for Neepawa.

Robert Wishart and Brayden Cullum scored for Major Pratt in a losing cause.

Game 2 of the series takes place on Tuesday night in Neepawa.


Robertson off to 2-1 start at seniors

Neepawa's Kelly Robertson has won two of his first three games at the Canadian senior men's curling championship in Yellowknife, NT.

Robertson and his team scored three in the third and another three in the fourth end en route to a 12-5 win over New Brunswick in their opening game on Saturday.

Robertson played two games on Sunday, falling behind 5-0 after three ends, losing 7-4 to Northern Ontario in his first contest of the day. Robertson followed that up by scoring a deuce in the fifth end and three in the eighth in a 9-4 win over Saskatchewan.

Meanwhile, on the women's side, Brandon's Lois Fowler and her team remain undefeated at 3-0.

The championship finals are slated to take place next Saturday afternoon.

The winners will represent Canada at the 2015 world senior championships.


Wheat Kings off to 2-0 lead

The Brandon Wheat Kings are off to a great start in their first round playoff series against the Regina Pats in the Western Hockey League playoffs.

On Saturday, Brandon jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead tonight en route to a 6-3 victory in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference quarter-final series in Regina.

Jesse Gabrielle scored once and set up linemates Jayce Hawryluk and John Quenneville for two others to pace the Wheat Kings to the win.

Peter Quenneville, Ryan Pilon and captain Ryan Pulock - the game's first star - rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings.

On Sunday, the Wheat Kings used a five-goal second period to double up on the Pats 8-4 at the Brandt Centre in Regina.

After battling back from an early 1-0 deficit to grab a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes, the Wheat Kings took over in the second - outscoring the Pats 5-1 to take a commanding 7-2 lead through two periods of play.

The line of Richard Nejezchleb, Tim McGauley and Neepawa's Quintin Lisoway combined for seven points for the Wheat Kings in the win.

McGauley scored twice and set up another while Nejezchleb added a goal and two assists. Lisoway meanwhile, added an assist.

Game 3 of the series takes place in Brandon at Westman Place on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.


MJHL: Oil Caps fall in Game 1

The Virden Oil Capitals are down 1-0 in their Manitoba Junior Hockey League Sher-Wood Division final series against the Dauphin Kings.

Jared Morris scored a goal and added two assists as the Kings doubled up the Oil Caps 4-2 on Sunday in Dauphin.

Rob Newton and Jake Dudar replied for Virden.

Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Blues have taken an early lead in the Addison Division final after defeating the defending champ Steinbach Pistons 4-2.


Wild win AAA midget title

The Winnipeg Wild are this year's Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League champions.

Zach Court scored in double overtime to lift the Wild to a 5-4 win over the Eastman Selects on Friday night, winning the best-of-five series in four games.

 

Lakers down 2-1 in Tiger Hills final

The Gladstone Lakers have fallen behind in the Tiger Hills Hockey League championship final to the Deloraine Royals.

The Lakers dropped a 2-0 decision to the Royals on Friday night and followed that up with a 4-2 loss to Deloraine on Saturday. The Royals now lead the best-of-five series 2-1.

Kris Benson and Tanner Waldvogel scored the two goals for Gladstone in the loss.

Game 4 of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night in Gladstone. Game 5 (if necessary) will take place on Friday night in Deloraine.


Lawrence, Huskies fall in CIS final

Newdale product John Lawrence and the Saskatchewan Huskies lost 3-1 to the Alberta Golden Bears on Sunday in the University Cup CIS men's hockey championship final.

Lawrence is a former member of the MJHL's Neepawa Natives.


Wildcats one win away

The Westman Wildcats have opened up a two game lead in the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League championship final.

On Friday in Morden, Ashton Bell scored the game winner in double overtime to give the Wildcats a 3-2 win. On Sunday, the Wildcats wound up defeating the Pembina Valley Hawks 4-1 in Game 2 of the series in Hartney.

The Wildcats will look to close out the best-of-five series on Wednesday in Morden.

If the Wildcats are successful, it'll be the first league title for Westman in their history.


Stoughton's team breaking up; Kolomaya wins mixed title

Big news in men's curling in the province.

Jeff Stoughton's rink, which includes Jon Mead, Mark Nichols and Reid Carruthers are going their separate ways at the end of this season.

The team wound up failing to make the playoffs at the Roar of the Rings Canadian curling trials late last year. The team also ended up failing to make the final at the Brier, finishing in third.

In other curling news, Jared Kolomaya won the provincial mixed curling championship, defeating David Kraichy 6-5 in the championship final on Sunday.

Kolomaya's rink will now represent the province at the national mixed championship in North Bay, Ont. in November.

Lastly, Rachel Homan and her Team Canada rink lost 9-5 to Switzerland in the championship final at the World women's curling championship.

 

Jets lose to Canes

The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 3-2 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night in the NHL.

Jim Slater and Bryan Little scored for the Jets, who are six points out of a playoff spot with 10 games remaining on their schedule.
