Weekend sports wrap: Natives lose to Steelers, Pistons; Robertson clinches Safeway berth

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Natives fall to Steelers, Pistons

The Neepawa Natives lost both of their games over the weekend in Manitoba Junior Hockey League action.

On Friday night, the Natives dropped an 8-1 decision to the Selkirk Steelers at the Yellowhead Centre.

The Natives lone goal came in the third period off the stick of Lyndon Soper at the 6:32 mark.

Dallas Starodub, Parker Thomas and Soren Fredriksen each scored twice for Selkirk in the win.

Derrick Brooks, who was traded by Neepawa to Selkirk late November, also got his name on the scoresheet, netting a goal and added two assists against his former club.

Brett Dudar scored the other goal for the Steelers, who received a solid performance in net from Braeden Ostepchuk and Nathan Park as the duo combined make 18 saves en route to the win.

Recently acquired Matt Young ended up taking the loss in net for the Natives, stopping 43 of 51 shots.

On Sunday, the Natives hosted the defending league champion Steinbach Pistons and ended up falling by a score of 7-3.

Soper opened the scoring at the 5:06 mark of the first period, giving the Natives their lone lead of the contest. The Pistons however, scored four consecutive tallies -- including three consecutive from Hayden Goderis and another goal from Tyler Penner -- before Soper scored his second of the game on the power play, making the score 4-2 for Steinbach after 40 minutes of play.

Brady Bouchard scored for the Natives approximately 10 minutes into the third to cut the lead in half but that was as close as Neepawa would get.

Justin Augert scored twice, while Colin Baudry netted the other goal, helping the Pistons improve to 25-7-1 this season.

Nicholas Deery made 29 saves to pick up the win in net for Steinbach, while Young made his second consecutive start, stopping 30 of 37 shots for Neepawa, who dropped their fourth game in a row and now sit with a 9-22-4 record.

Natives notes

- Natives goaltender Davy Fisher is currently sidelined with an upper body injury and is expected to be out of action until the new year. The 19-year-old has played in 11 games with Neepawa this season, compiling a 3-5 record with a 3.89 goals against average and a .895 save percentage.

- For those of you wondering who goaltender Matt Young is with the Natives, he was recently acquired from the Blind River Beavers of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. He is a 19-year-old from Kingsley, N.B.

Wheat Kings lose to Rockets in OT; defeat Warriors

The Brandon Wheat Kings played two games over the weekend. The Western Hockey League club battled the Kelowna Rockets on Friday night and wound up falling 6-5 in overtime at Westman Communications Group Place.

Myles Bell scored the game winner for the Rockets 2:52 in overtime which came after Kelowna had scored twice in the final 38 seconds to tie the game in the third period.

Peter Quenneville led Brandon offensively with two goals and an assist.

On Saturday, the Wheat Kings closed out the first half of their schedule with a 4-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Neepawa's Quintin Lisoway scored his second goal of the season for Brandon in the win. Minnedosa's Chad Robinson, Tyler Coulter and Jens Meilleur scored the other goals for the Wheat Kings, who now sit with a 18-14-3-0 record.

The Wheat Kings don't play again until Dec. 27 when they host the Regina Pats.

Tigers defeat Huskies, Wildcats

The Westman High School Hockey League's Neepawa Tigers had a successful weekend, winning both of their games.

On Friday night, Wyatt Salmon scored four goals and added an assist, helping the Tigers take down the Huskies in Hamiota on Friday night by a score of 9-1.

On Sunday, Salmon had an even better night, scoring five goals and adding two assists as the Tigers ended up routing the Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur Wildcats 9-1.

The Tigers now sit with a 7-2-0 record and are in third place in the standings.

Farmers fall to Plainsmen

The struggles continued for the Neepawa Farmers on Saturday night in Tiger Hills Hockey League action.

The Farmers held a one goal lead after 40 minutes of play but ended up allowing two goals in the third as the Lakers edged the Farmers 8-7 in Gladstone.

Ian Kerkowich netted a hat-trick for the Farmers, who dropped to 2-7-1 this season.

Chiefs sweep two-game set against Northstars

The Yellowhead Chiefs travelled to Thompson over the weekend and ended up defeating the Norman Northstars on Saturday and Sunday night.

On Saturday, Tanner Koroscil, Jake Coulter and Morgan Geekie scored for the Chiefs en route to the win.

On Sunday, five different Chiefs scored to help Yellowhead defeat the Northstars 5-1.

Ashton Anderson, Morgan Geekie, Tyler Dereniwski, Jordan Robertson and Tanner Kyle scored for the Chiefs, who improved 13-12-0-1 this season.

Robertson clinches berth into Safeway Championship

Neepawa's Kelly Robertson has clinched a berth into the 2014 Safeway men's provincial curling championship.

Robertson's rink was one of three teams that clinched Westman berths at the regional playdowns in Hamiota over the weekend.

The Safeway Championship will take place at the MTS IcePlex in Winnipeg Jan. 29 - Feb. 2.

A total of 18 berths for the championship were allocated over the weekend through seven regions.

Meanwhile, two Brandon-based teams clinched berths into the Scotties provincial women's curling championship.

Kortney Teale's rink and Stacey Fordyce's team both earned spots at a regional event at the Brandon Curling Club over the weekend.

The Scotties take place in Virden at the Tundra Oil and Gas Place Jan. 8 - 12.

Jets fall to Stars; Peluso suspended

The Winnipeg Jets lost 6-4 to the Dallas Stars on Saturday afternoon.

Blake Wheeler scored twice, while Matt Halischuk and Olli Jokinen netted the other tallies for the Jets, who now sit with a 14-15-5 record.

Tyler Seguin had two goals and two assists for the Stars.

In the contest, Jets forward Anthony Peluso was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for boarding Stars blueliner Alex Goligoski and has since been suspended three games for the incident.

 

Spartans finish as a runner-up in Tier 2 Division at BSSI

The Brandon-based Neelin Spartans ended up with a runner-up finish at the 10th annual Brandon Sun Spartan Invitational high school varsity boys basketball tournament.

The Spartans lost 79-47 to the St. John's Ravenscourt Eagles in Saturday's Tier 2 Division final at the Neelin Gym.

Brock Hiltner scored 15 points for the Spartans, who defeated the Lloydminster Barons 72-50 earlier in the tournament to advance to the championship final.

Meanwhile, the Oak Park Raiders wound up winning the Tier 1 Division final, defeating the Garden City Fighting Gophers 79-76 in the championship game.

The Minnedosa Chancellors took part in the event and ended up finishing 16th overall in the Tier 2 (Tri-Star) Division.
