Weekend sports wrap: Natives defeat Stampeders, Steelers; Jacobs, Jones win ROTR

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

Natives pick up four of a possible six points

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Neepawa Natives were busy over the weekend, playing three games in three nights.

On Friday night, Brady Bouchard scored twice and added a pair of assists, helping the Natives defeat the Swan Valley Stampeders 5-2 at the Yellowhead Centre.

Sam Briscoe also had a pair of goals, while Ryan McQueen netted the other tally for the Natives as the club snapped a seven game losing streak.

Tyson Verhelst picked up the win between the pipes for Neepawa, making 32 saves in the process. Nathan Armstrong took the loss in net for Swan Valley, stopping 38 of 43 shots.

On Saturday, the Natives traveled to Selkirk and despite getting outshot 46-19, ended up winning their second game in a row, defeating the Steelers 4-2.

Sam Brisoe, Colton Magwood, Drake Lindsay and Riley Hillis scored for Neepawa in the win.

Verhelst, who was making his second straight start in net for Neepawa, stopped 44 of 46 shots to pick up the win. Nathan Park meanwhile, turned aside 15 of 19 shots in net for Selkirk.

On Sunday, the Natives returned home and wound up falling 6-2 to the Dauphin Kings at the Yellowhead Centre.

Clayton Heinrichs and Luke Karakas scored for Neepawa in the loss.

Kings netminder Brian Archibald made 23 saves to pick up the win, while a combination of Verhelst and Davy Fisher made 37 saves in net for Neepawa.

After the weekend's action, the Natives now sit with a record of 9-19-4 and are currently in fifth place in the Sher-Wood Division.

Tigers win Tier 3 consolation final at Vic Inn tourney

The 23rd annual Victoria Inn High School Hockey Tournament took place in Brandon over the weekend.

The event included several high school teams from the Westman area, including the Neepawa Tigers, who wound up winning the Tier 3 Division consolation championship, defeating the Stonewall Rams in the final.

Meanwhile, Russell's Major Pratt Trojans ended up winning the Tier 2 Division title, edging the Kelvin Clippers in the final.

Lastly, Brandon's Vincent Massey Vikings lost 4-1 to the Morden Thunder in the Tier 1 Division consolation final.

The Oak Park Raiders wound up winning the tournament, defeating the St. John's Ravenscourt Eagles 3-1 in the final.

Lisoway scores game winner as Wheat Kings defeat Moose Jaw; club deals Tai

Neepawa's Quintin Lisoway scored his first goal of the season at the 5:27 mark of the third period, which snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 3-1 win over the Warriors in Moose Jaw on Saturday night.

Veteran Eric Roy and rookie Tyler Coulter rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who dropped a 4-3 decision to the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night.

Wheat Kings netminder Curtis Honey turned aside 29 shots, including 23 through the first two periods in his first start since the Western Hockey League club's annual west coast road trip in October. The 19-year old Edmonton product had missed 14 games with an upper body injury before coming on to play the third period against Swift Current on Friday.

The Wheat Kings, who now sit with a 16-14-2-0 record, will now return home for three straight games before the Christmas break on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday against Kamloops, Kelowna and the Moose Jaw respectively.

John Quenneville, Richard Nejezchleb and Rihard Bukarts scored for Brandon in the loss on Friday. 

In other Wheat Kings news, the club made a deal on Friday, shipping 18-year-old goaltender Christopher Tai to the Medicine Hat Tigers for a conditional draft pick.

Tai was acquired from Lethbridge late November.


Farmers fall to Pilots in Tiger Hills

The Neepawa Farmers dropped a 6-5 overtime decision to the Pilot Mound Pilots in Tiger Hills Hockey League action on Saturday night.

Ian Kerkowich scored twice, while Devon Epp, Rodney White and Eric Jury scored the other tallies for Neepawa in the loss.

The Farmers now sit with a 2-6-1 record and are in last place in the East Division.

Chiefs defeat Capitals; fall to Hawks, Wild in OT

The Yellowhead Chiefs edged the Central Plains Capitals 4-3 in overtime on Friday night in Portage in Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League action.

Tanner Koroscil ended up as the hero, netting a hat-trick for the Chiefs, including the game winner in overtime.

The Chiefs remained busy throughout the weekend, playing two more games, losing 4-0 to the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday and following that up with a 1-0 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Wild on Sunday.

The Chiefs now sit with a 11-11-0-1 record.

Curling: Jacobs, Jones win Roar of the Rings

Brad Jacobs and Jennifer Jones will be representing Canada in curling at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Brad Jacobs scored deuces in the sixth and ninth ends en route to a 7-4 win over John Morris' rink in the men's final on Sunday at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

Jacobs finished the event with a perfect 8-0 record.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Jennifer Jones' rink defeated Sherry Middaugh 8-4 in the women's final.


Scheifele lifts Jets to OT win

The Winnipeg Jets picked up a 2-1 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in NHL action on Saturday night.

Mark Scheifele scored the game winner at the 1:04 mark of overtime.

Blake Wheeler scored the regulation goal for Winnipeg, while Nate Thompson replied for Tampa Bay.

The Jets currently sit with a 14-13-4 record and are in sixth place in the Central Division.
