The Neepawa Natives pulled off a rather significant deal prior to the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Dec. 1 trade freeze.

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League club shipped their leading scorer Derrick Brooks to the Selkirk

Steelers for 19-year-old forward Brady Bouchard and the list rights to 16-year-old blueliner Kruz Listmayer.

Brooks, 20, from Portage was in his third season with the Natives. The forward had eight goals and 20 points in 25 games this season.

Bouchard meanwhile, has six goals and 13 points in 18 games with Selkirk. Listmayer is a prospect who is currently playing for the AAA midget Winnipeg Hawks. He was an 11th round draft pick of the Western Hockey League's Swift Current Broncos (227th overall) in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.

Natives general manager Myles Cathcart says the deal has two parts to it.

“First, Bouchard has a similar skill-set as Brooks and is a year younger. The second part is Listmayer, who is  a big strong defenceman at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds. So one player helps now and in the future and one player helps with building [the club],” he said.

“The Natives have a lot of respect for Derrick Brooks,” he continued. “He was an excellent community member, was a character person and has been great on and off the ice. We wish him the best of luck.”

In other MJHL news, the OCN Blizzard have traded 18-year-old defenceman Keifer Schaufler to the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the SJHL for future considerations.

Kings defeat Stampeders

In the lone game of the MJHL schedule on Tuesday night, the Dauphin Kings defeated the Swan Valley Stampeders.

Dylan Butler had two goals and an assist for the Kings, who improved to 13-11-1 this season.
