The following is a look-back on what transpired in sports over the weekend . . .

Memorial Cup underway

The Canadian Hockey League's Memorial Cup is underway in Saskatoon.

The WHL's Portland Winterhawks picked up their first win at the junior hockey tournament, defeating the London Knights 6-3 on Monday night.

Meanwhile, the Saskatoon Blades, the host and other WHL club taking part in the event, defeated the Halifax Mooseheads 5-2 on Sunday night. It was the Blades' first win in approximately two months. Saskatoon was swept by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the first round of the WHL playoffs in late March.

Matej Stransky scored twice for the Blades, while Andrey Makarov made 29 saves between the pipes for Saskatoon to pick up the win.

All four teams currently sit with 1-1 records at the tourney.

Round-robin action continues on Tuesday night as the Mooseheads, the CHL's top-ranked team, take on the London Knights.

Rugby playoffs set to begin

The Westman High School Rugby League playoffs are set to begin later this week.

The last regular season games took place on Monday with the league's semifinals scheduled to take place on Wednesday.


NHL playoffs

The Detroit Red Wings hold a 2-1 lead over the Chicago Blackhawks in their best-of-seven NHL Western Conference semifinal.

The Red Wings defeated the Blackhawks 3-1 on Monday night to take the series lead.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Kings hold a 2-1 lead over the San Jose Sharks in the other Western Conference semifinal.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pittsburgh Penguins hold a 2-1 series lead over the Ottawa Senators, while the Boston Bruins hold a 2-0 series lead over the New York Rangers.
