RCMP unveils checkstop results from long weekend

Despite the rainy weather over the long weekend, RCMP members were conducting checkstops throughout the province.

The focus was on high-risk driving behaviours as part of the National Road Safety Week campaign, which ran from May 13 - 20 this year.
 
As a result of the campaign, there were:

-          43 Impaired driving charges (including three impaired by drugs)
-          16 alcohol-related administrative suspensions
-          68 charges for failing to wear seat belts
-          746 charges for speeding
-          54 charges for fail to stop at an intersection
-          26 charges for using a handheld electronic device while driving 
-          373 other traffic-related charges
-          21 prohibited/suspended drivers
 
Three fatalities occurred during Road Safety Week this year. 
 
In comparison, during the 2012 campaign, there were: 
 
-          50 impaired driving charges
-          5 alcohol-related administrative suspensions
-          90 charges for failing to wear seat belts
-          665 charges for speeding
-          43 charges for fail to stop at an intersection
-          16 charges for using a handheld electronic device while driving 
-          289 other traffic-related charges
-          32 prohibited/suspended drivers
 
One fatal collision occurred over National Road Safety Week in 2012.
