RCMP make break and enter arrest |

myWestman.ca On Thursday, RCMP made an arrest in relation to a number of break and enters to businesses within several rural communities. Initial investigation revealed that suspects stole a vehicle and used it to commit break and enters in the towns of MacGregor, Austin and Gladstone. A substantial amount of liquor was stolen.
The vehicle and a large amount of the liquor has since been recovered. A 26-year-old male resident of Long Plain First Nation, Manitoba has been arrested and charges are pending. The RCMP along with the Winnipeg Major Crime Unit continue to investigate the crime. |

Brandon firefighter and union president fired |

myWestman.ca Wade Ritchie, firefighter and president of the Brandon Firefighters and Paramedics Association has been fired. Brandon media reports surfaced on Thursday mentioning the move was made official by the city and from Alex Forrest, president of the United Firefighters of Winnipeg and Canadian Trustee with the International Association of Fire Fighters. In October, the city of Brandon suspended Ritchie for five days and ended up demoting him from lieutenant to a rank-and-file firefighter. |

New correctional centre for women set to open |

myWestman.ca A new correctional centre for women is set to open in Headingley as early as the end of this month and will offer female offenders more opportunities to participate in programming that will help them prepare to be integrated back into the community, Justice Minister Andrew Swan announced on Thursday. Eden rink renovated and ready |

By: Kate Jackman-Atkinson myWestman.ca Following a massive flood two years ago, the board of the Eden Rink was faced with a choice, completely rebuild or abandon the building. They decided to rebuild. Five inches of rain in late spring of 2009 flooded the entire building and board chair Tim Wiebe said that since then, they’ve totally rebuilt the building. He adds that there is still some work to be finished on the hall though. For more, click here. |

Fire breaks out in Brandon |

myWestman.ca A fire broke out late Monday afternoon in Brandon. The Sturgeon Tire building, located on the corner of first and pacific, has been destroyed. Emergency crews worked on the fire all night and continue to monitor the situation on Tuesday. According to several media reports, the fire started in one of the service bays. No vehicles were in the building. Also, at one point, approximately 500 homes near the area had no hydro because of the fire. Update (4:30 p.m. Wednesday) Media reports are now saying that an overheated motor on an air compressor was the cause of the fire. Photo by Lanny Stewart |
