On Feb. 18, the Flats in Neepawa will be turned into a Winter Wonderland for the annual Neepawa Winter Wonderland Festival. The event takes place on Louis Riel day and features a wide range of activities for kids and adults of all ages.

With support from area businesses and individuals, Town of Neepawa Leisure Services manager Amanda Cathcart has arranged a number of fun activities including free horse drawn sleigh rides, prize draws, skating with the Neepawa Natives, human bowling, an obstacle course, shuffle golf, outdoor bannock making and metis beading crafts.  There will also be free hotdogs, popcorn, hot chocolate and juice.

The sleigh rides have always been popular and Cathcart says that this year they have added a third sleigh, meaning there will be less of a wait for the rides.

New for this year is beading crafts for children, which will be taking place inside the women’s change room at the Flats.  The event is open to both boys and girls, but children under eight years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Returning for this year is the fifth annual chili cook off, which pits businesses, organizations and individuals against one another in an effort to produce the town’s best chili.  This year, prize money for the event has been upped with a $500 first place prize and cash prices through third place.

Cathcart says they are hoping to attract groups and organizations looking for funding as well as businesses and are still taking entries into the competition. For $2, people can taste test the chili and vote on their favourite.

There will also be three draws for both a mini-snowboard and a GT Snow Racer.

The activities will take place between 12 noon and 3 p.m. at the Brown Ave. rink at the Flats.
