Combine three garden plots, 14 children aged four to 12 guided by parents and grandparents, two overcast Friday mornings and Rivers area residents eager to enjoy fresh vegetables and what is the result? A $1,000 donation to Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB)!

The elementary school-aged kids helped with the planting, weeding, harvesting, bagging and selling of corn, cucumbers, beets, potatoes, onions and herbs.

CFGB is a partnership of 15 Canadian churches and church-based agencies working together to end global hunger. The Canadian government matches money raised for many CFGB projects with a ratio of 4:1 The $600 raised by selling produce and $400 in donations in Rivers becomes $5,000 to feed hungry people in developing countries. Knowing that $12 is needed to feed one person for one month, the $1,000 donation will feed 83 people for a month!

Such a sale involves the support of many other generous community folks. The Westoba Credit Union parking lot is a great location for such an event. There were shoppers seeking fresh local produce and a time of visiting with friends.  There were gardeners who needed no additional produce but who wanted to support CFGB with a monetary donation. The sale organizers are grateful to all who contributed in various ways to support this effort to bring food to those who face daily hunger.

The local Acres of Hope field harvest, which also raises money for CFGB, is expected to happen sometime in the next month. It will be weather-dependent, of course! Please contact Ron Krahn at 204-761-8702 for details on the fall harvest for CFGB.
