Angelou dead at age 86

American poet, author and civil rights activist Maya Angelou has died at the age of 86.

Angelou, who was also a Grammy winner, playwright and actress, died Wednesday morning at her home in Winston-Salem, N.C.

According to reports, Angelou had been in frail health for some time.

Angelou was known for touring the world, eventually learning several languages and speaking to sold-out crowds and stage audiences.

She would later find her calling as a teacher and was also a prominent member of the civil rights movement where she befriended other activists like Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
