The community of Minnedosa will be holding its first ever Relay For Life in July.

The popular 12-hour, overnight fundraising event for the Canadian Cancer Society will take place at the site of Rockin' The Fields on July 5 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Tammy Gowler is a chairperson for the upcoming event and was a team leader in the Brandon relay for the past few years. She says there are so many people in the Minnedosa, Neepawa and Erickson area that have been affected by cancer.

"As small communities, we all know each other and when I asked a few people for help, there was an overwhelming 'Yes, what can we do?'," she said.

Gowler says the fundraising goal for the event is $30,000.

"We feel we can reach it with all the support that we have been given."

Gowler herself joined the Relay For Life after a friend of hers passed away from cancer.

"I found that a way to help keep him alive in his wife and kids' minds was to help raise awareness and money so that hopefully in the future, other families would not have to go through such a horrible experience."

The event will include its annual "Survivor Lap" which will include those that have survived the disease,  as well as bands performing throughout the night as well as other fun activities. The Lions Club of Minnedosa will hold a breakfast in the morning for everyone that is in attendance.

Gowler says the event committee is actively looking for more teams and for donations.
