A court challenge by the Association of Manitoba Municipalities regarding the NDP government's decision to have several municipalities within the province amalgamate has been dismissed by a Court of Queen's Bench judge.

According to Bruce Owen of the Winnipeg Free Press, the judge found no breach of fairness in how the government instituted its new municipal amalgamation law.

The AMM will not appeal the decision, which means a lengthy battle by the municipalities and the Selinger government regarding the NDP opting to amalgamate municipalities with less than 1,000 people has come to a close.

Due to the court decision, slightly more than half of the 41 municipalities in Westman will now have to amalgamate.

Amalgamation will officially become law Jan. 1, 2015.
