Rapid City 4-H Beef Club attended the annual Neepawa 4-H Fat Stock Show and Sale on Canada Day. Opening ceremonies were at 9 a.m. with all clubs in the show ring to sing O Canada and recite the 4-H pledge. Judges were Gerry and Andrea Bertholet, announcer was Ron Kristjansson, clerk was Barb Kristjansson, show marshal was Alana Madsen, photographer was Amanada Woychyshyn, auctioneer was Ward Cutler, blockman was Terry Woychyshyn and ring persons were Brad Ginter, Greg Woychyshyn, Keith Cleaver and Brad Delgaty

Grooming classes were first with these results for our club: James Reid placed fourth in the first split of senior (ages 15-17) and Drew Horner placed first in the second split, winning prize money. Brooklyn Hedley and Anja VandeLangemheen placed first and fourth in the second split; there were two other splits in junior (nine to 11 years) grooming and the overall winner was Brooklyn, who won an award donated by Farm Credit Canada, Neepawa. Sierra Inglis was in the cloverbud category (ages six to eight) and she placed second in the second split.

In senior showmanship both James and Drew placed third in their splits; Wyatt and Gavin were third and fourth intermediate, Thijs was second in the second split; Brooklyn and Anja were first and third in junior and Sierra was second in cloverbud. Brooklyn was the overall showman and won the Archie McNair Memorial Trophy. Because she was the overall junior winner in both grooming and showmanship, she was declared overall junior show person and won the Beautiful Plains Ag Society Shield.

Following grooming and showmanship classes, group of three steers and heifers from each club were shown. Rapid City’s three steers, owned by Thijs and Wyatt (progeny and market), placed second and won prize money from MLA Leanne Rowat. Our three heifers (Drew, Brooklyn and Wyatt) won first and received prize money from MLA Stu Briese.

Following lunch, the show resumed with inter-club grooming. Members from all clubs are put on teams and groom an animal; there were five placings with the following results for Rapid City members: Anja’s team was first, Brooklyn’s team was third, Seirra’s team was fourth and Wyatt’s team placed fifth. Following team grooming were conformation classes; Seirra placed second in beginning beef Group A (ages six to eight); Brooklyn and Anja placed first and second in Group B (ages nine to 11). Brooklyn won a trophy for champion beginning beef.

Breed specials for yearling heifers followed: Simmental, Brooklyn, James and Gavin, second, third and fourth respectively; Angus, Thijs was first in the second split which allowed him to advance to the final class where he placed second; crossbred and all other breeds, Drew, Wyatt and Anja, first-third respectively; progeny, Wyatt won second. Grand champion yearling heifer is open to the top two from each breed class and progeny class; Drew won reserve grand champion heifer with the remainder of that class receiving prize money which included Brooklyn, Thijs, and Wyatt, with both his progeny and yearling heifers. Two-year-old heifers with their own calf at foot were James (first), Thijs (second) and Gavin (fifth) in the first splits, Drew (second) and Wyatt (sixth) in the second split; James showed the champion continuation heifer and champion supreme female; Drew had reserve champion supreme female.

Prior to the sale, a supper was held for buyers, 4-H member and their families. Cow paddy bingo was also held, with monies put toward the scholarship fund for graduating members; Drew received one of these scholarships. Rapid City sold first this year, in order that steers placed at achievement on June 20 (Rapid City’s fair day).
