Weekend sports wrap: Farmers fall to Rockets in doubleheader; Manitoba performs well at Special Olympics

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .
MSBL: Farmers woes continue
The Neepawa Farmers had a rough weekend in Manitoba Senior Baseball League action, losing all three of their games to fall to 2-14 on the season.
The Farmers played a doubleheader against the Reston Rockets on Sunday in Neepawa, dropping a 6-3 decision in Game 1 and following that up with a 6-4 loss in Game 2.
In Game 1, Mark Lacroix had a big game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two more driven in for the Rockets in the win.
Rockets pitcher Buddy Mayert picked up the win, replacing Austin Brereton on the mound in the sixth inning and wound up allowing just one hit the rest of the way.
Garett Rempel was the losing pitcher, as he allowed four runs on three hits in 7 2/3 innings of work on the mound.
In Game 2, it was Lacroix again who had a solid day offensively, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, helping the Rockets improve to 7-10-1.
Bryce Stephenson took the loss on the bump for Neepawa, giving up six runs and 11 hits in 7 2/3 innings.
Rob Wilson went 2-for-5 at the plate, scoring a pair of runs and picking up an RBI for Neepawa in a losing cause.
On Friday night, the Farmers had a dreadful first inning en route to a 13-5 loss to the Brandon Marlins at Andrews Field.
Bret Heselwood drove in three runs and scored twice himself, while Ty Webber also had a big day at the plate with three RBI for the Marlins, who ended up scoring 10 times in the bottom of the first.
Shayne MacGranachan was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on three hits for Brandon, while Dale Penner took the loss on the mound for Neepawa.
Rob Wilson picked up two RBI for the Farmers in the loss.

Rosenort wins provincial ‘A’ mosquito baseball title
Rosenort defeated Souris 3-2 on Sunday to win the provincial mosquito ‘A’ Zone 2 provincial baseball championship in Hamiota.
Rosenort advanced to the final after edging Mitchell 5-4, while Souris got by host Hamiota 6-0.
Meanwhile, the host Morden defeated Minnedosa 8-3 in the Bantam ‘A’ Zone 2 championship, while LaBroquerie won the Pee Wee ‘A’ Zone 2 championship in Swan River, defeating Dauphin 17-6 in the final.
Manitoba performs well at Special Olympics
Team Manitoba performed well at the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games, which wrapped up on Saturday in Vancouver.
Team Manitoba, which consisted of 91 athletes competing in 11 different sports, came away with 76 medals in total.
In bowling, Team Manitoba 3, which consisted of Danny St. Onge, Darren Boryskavich, Dwayne Petch, Taylor Scott and Jack Porhownkik, won a gold medal, while Team Manitoba 1, which consisted of Alysia Roy, Nadine Colomb, Keith Jacobsen, Bob Hebert and Peter Dumas, won a bronze medal. Meanwhile Team Manitoba 2, which included Kristen Boyechko, Laurie Goodon, Jennifer Adams, Lucille Cassells and Angie Ferland, also won bronze.
The soccer team, which is made up of entirely Westman athletes, wound up winning gold in Division B, while Manitoba’s softball team ended up taking home a silver medal (Division B).
In golf, David Ingram won gold; Tammy Lumax came away with silver, while Danny Peaslee ended up winning bronze.

Harding comes away with KO
Brandon professional boxer Noel Harding defeated Cheyenne Ziegler in a first round knockout in a middleweight bout in Grand Forks, N.D., on Saturday.
With the win, Harding, 33, improved his pro record to 4-0 and is now ranked fifth in Canada for pro light middleweight boxers.
Harding’s next fight is scheduled to take place in September in Belcourt, N.D.
Thompson wins Golf Manitoba match play title
Bret Thompson of the Southwood golf club won the Golf Manitoba match play championship over the weekend in Winnipeg.
Thompson defeated Wade Wetelainen 7-and-5 in the men’s final match.
The women’s champion was Bri-ann Tokariwski of Elmhurst, who defeated Faye Zachedniak (also of Elmhurst) 11-and-10 in the final.
Cobras win AAA Hockey Challenge
The Manitoba Cobras defeated the Eastwest Connection 10-6 in the championship final of the Source for Sports AAA Hockey Challenge in Brandon over the weekend.
Tyler Coulter scored a pair of goals of the Cobras, who won the 1995-1997 age group division (the only division in action).
Germany wins World Cup
Germany won the 2014 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, edging Argentina 1-0 in the final in Brazil.
Mario Goetze scored the lone goal in stoppage time after being substituted into the match late in the contest.
It was Germany’s fourth World Cup title.
