Weekend sports wrap: Farmers fall to Marlins; Heschuk performs well in half marathon

The following is a recap of what transpired in local sports over the weekend . . .

MSBL: Farmers fall to Marlins

The Brandon Marlins scored four runs in the first and second inning en route to a convincing 10-3 win over the Neepawa Farmers in Manitoba Senior Baseball League action on Sunday afternoon at Andrews Field.

Ryan Duncan went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBI for the Marlins in the win. Dustin Asham also picked up two RBI for Brandon in the contest.

Sam McNeice picked up the win on the mound for Brandon, going eight innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking out four Neepawa batters.

Rob Wilson drove in two runs for Neepawa, while Josh Loewen took the loss on the bump for the Farmers, going three innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits. Daylon Creasy finished the game, pitching five innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

The Marlins would later take on their city rival Cloverleafs on Sunday night and wound up losing 10-5. The other game saw the Oak River Dodgers defeat the Reston Rockets 9-1.

There were no games on Friday as both contests scheduled were rained out.

The Cloverleafs lead the way in the MSBL with a 6-1 record, followed by the Marlins at 5-2-1, Reston at 2-3-1, Oak River at 3-5 and Neepawa at 1-6.

 

Heschuk finishes in first

Neepawa’s Daniel Heschuk performed well at the 36th annual Manitoba Marathon in Winnipeg on Sunday.

Heschuk finished first overall in the half marathon in the male 15-19 age category with a time of 1:15:15.7.

In the full marathon, Brian Walker, 32, won the men's event with a time of 2:36:44, while Alice Sherwin won the women's event with a time of 3:04:38.

Westman-area results in the full marathon include. . .

- Juraj Karcak of Brandon who finished 36th overall in the men’s event (11/50 in the 40-44 age category) with a time of 3:19:33.9

- Brandon’s Joun Kellehg, who finished in 49th place (second overall in the men’s 50-54 age category) with a time of 3:25:45.6

- Grant Hughes of Brandon ended up in 51st place (third overall in the men’s 50-54 age category) with a time of 3:26:43.2

- Daniel Therrien of Hamiota finished in 15th place in the men’s 50-54 age category (109th overall), finishing with a time of 3:44:10.0

- Kris Farquhar of Rivers finished in 30th place in the men’s 30-34 age category (259th overall) with a time of 4:25::50.4


Jacobson wins Grey Owl

Brandon's Jared Jacobson won the 54th annual Grey Owl golf tournament in Clear Lake over the weekend.

Jacobson shot rounds of 69 on Saturday and 74 on Sunday to win the tourney by one stroke over fellow Brandonite Rob Hall.

Garth Collings, a nine-time champion of the event, ended up in third place, while Jay Thiesen of Russell finished in fourth.

Meanwhile, Ken Mould of St. Charles won the Greyer Owl 50-plus title, shooting a two-round total of 149, one stroke better than Dave Anderson of B.C.


Oil Caps acquire Sharples

There was a trade in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League on Friday. The Virden Oil Capitals acquired 19-year-old defenceman Brett Sharples from the Nipawin Hawks for future considerations.

 

Kings win Stanley Cup

In case you missed it, the Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup on Friday night, defeating the New York Rangers 3-2 in double overtime in Game 5, winning the series 4-1.

Alec Martinez netted the cup winner for the Kings.

The Kings have some Westman flavour as well as Brandon’s Darren Granger is the Kings’ equipment manager.

Spurs win NBA title

The San Antonio Spurs won the NBA title on Sunday night, defeating the Miami Heat 104-87 in Game 5, winning the best-of-seven championship series 4-1.

Kaymer wins U.S. Open

Martin Kaymer went wire-to-wire at the U.S. Open, winning the event by eight strokes over Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler.

Kaymer shot a one-under 69 on Sunday to finish at nine-under for the event.
